The Patch Reef Revolution: Guide to Boca's 18 Covered Pickleball Courts

Last updated: January 2026

In Florida, there are two enemies of pickleball: The blazing sun and the 3:00 PM thunderstorm. For years, players just had to deal with it. Not anymore. With the opening of the massive covered facility at Patch Reef Park, Boca Raton has officially become the Pickleball Capital of the Palm Beaches.

Don't be this guy. The Florida sun is undefeated. The covered courts at Patch Reef keep you playing comfortably even at high noon.

1. The 18-Court Revolution

Located on Yamato Road, Patch Reef Park has transformed into a racquet sports monster. The recent addition of 18 covered pickleball courts (plus dozens of uncovered ones) makes it one of the largest facilities of its kind.

  • The Cover: These are not indoor courts; they are open-air courts with massive steel roofs. You get the fresh air and breeze without the direct UV rays or rain.
  • The Lighting: LED lights are integrated into the roof structure, making this the premier spot for evening play in Boca.
  • The Crowds: Because it is the nicest facility in the county, it is packed. You cannot just "show up" and expect a court during prime time.

2. How to Book (PlayByPoint App)

This is where new players get stuck. Patch Reef uses a specific app called PlayByPoint. You cannot book via phone or the general city website.

📱 The Booking Sprint
  1. Download the PlayByPoint app.
  2. Residents: You can book courts 2 days in advance (starting at 1:00 PM).
  3. Non-Residents: You can book 1 day in advance (starting at 1:00 PM).

Pro Tip: If you are a non-resident wanting a Saturday morning court, log in at exactly 1:00 PM on Friday. They will be gone by 1:05 PM.

3. Costs: Resident vs. Non-Resident

Patch Reef is a public park, but the "covered" luxury comes with a fee structure.

CategoryCost (Approx)Booking Window
Permit Holder (Resident) Free / Included 2 Days Advance
Non-Resident Guest ~$10-$15 per person 1 Day Advance

4. Local Rules & Culture

With 18 courts running simultaneously, the vibe is energetic but structured.

  • Check-In: You must check in at the Pro Shop (located in the tennis building) before heading to the courts. They will give you your court assignment.
  • No Coaching: Unless you are a city-contracted pro, commercial coaching is strictly prohibited. (If you want a lesson, book with Golden Racket Academy, and we handle the permitting).
  • Noise: It gets loud. The metal roof reflects the sound of the ball. Bring your "quiet" paddle if you have one, though it's not mandatory.

5. Frequently Asked Questions

Do the covered courts stay dry when it rains?

Mostly. The roof provides excellent protection from vertical rain. However, during a heavy Florida thunderstorm with strong winds, sideways rain can soak the outer courts. The inner courts usually stay dry.

Are there open play hours?

Yes. Patch Reef designates specific blocks for "Open Play" where you don't need a reservation and rotate in. Check the PlayByPoint app for the current "Open Play" schedule, as it shifts seasonally.

Own the Covered Court

Playing under a roof changes the game—the sound is louder, and the lighting is different. If you want to master the conditions at Patch Reef, book a lesson with Golden Racket Academy. Our coaches know exactly how to adjust your game for the covered environment.
