The Beginner’s Guide to Austin Tennis Leagues (CATA, ATL & Social)

Last updated: December 2025

You’ve hit at the park a few times, your forehand is landing in, and now you’re ready for a match. But in Austin, finding a game can feel like decoding a secret language. CATA? ATL? Ladders? This guide breaks down the major tennis leagues in Austin so you can stop researching acronyms and start playing points.

Austin has a league for every level—from "beer tennis" to serious competition.

1. CATA (Capital Area Tennis Association)

This is the big one. CATA manages the official USTA leagues in Austin. If you want to play on a team, have a national rating (NTRP), and potentially go to sectionals or nationals, this is where you play.

  • Best For: Competitive players and those who want "official" matches.
  • Commitment: High. Weekly matches, usually on weekends or weeknights depending on the flight.
  • Cost: USTA Membership ($44/year) + League Fee (~$25/season).

2. ATL (Austin Tennis League)

Unique to our city, the Austin Tennis League is a fantastic alternative to USTA. It is generally more relaxed, less bureaucratic, and very social. Many teams play out of neighborhood clubs or public centers like Austin High Tennis Center.

  • Vibe: "Serious fun." Good tennis, but often with a post-match hang.
  • Format: Saturday team matches are the standard.

3. Austin Tennis Net (Ladders)

If you have a busy schedule and can't commit to a team every Saturday at 9 AM, ladder leagues are your savior. You are placed in a box of players. You schedule matches with them whenever/wherever you want. If you win, you move up the ladder.

  • Best For: Busy professionals and players who want flexibility.
  • Cost: Very affordable (often ~$35/year).

4. Austin Sports & Social Club

The "Beer League" of tennis. If your main goal is to meet people and maybe hit a ball occasionally, this is it. It’s co-ed, very casual, and often involves happy hours.

Don't Know Your Rating? Most beginners are a 2.5 or 3.0. If you rate yourself too high, you'll get crushed. If too low, you're "sandbagging." Book a 1-on-1 Evaluation Lesson with us, and we’ll tell you exactly where you fit in the Austin scene.

Summary: Which League Fits You?

LeagueVibeCommitment
CATA / USTA Competitive High (Fixed Schedule)
ATL Social / Competitive Medium (Saturday mornings)
Austin Tennis Net Flexible Low (You set the time)
Austin SSC Pure Social Low (Beer > Forehands)
