How to Survive (and Win) Playing Pickleball in the Houston Summer
Last updated: June 2025
Playing pickleball in Houston heat is not for the faint of heart. Between May and September, the humidity turns hard courts into frying pans. But that doesn’t mean you have to stop playing. It just means you need a better strategy. From finding the best indoor courts to knowing exactly when to schedule your matches, this guide will keep you on the court when everyone else is hiding inside.
1. Change Your Hours (The "Vampire Schedule")
The most obvious tip is also the most ignored. Do not play between 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM. In Houston, the court surface temperature can exceed 120°F during these hours. The best times to play are:
- Early Morning (6:00 AM – 8:30 AM): This is when the humidity is highest, but the sun is weakest.
- Late Evening (7:30 PM – 10:00 PM): Many locations listed in our Guide to Public Pickleball Courts in Houston have excellent lighting for night play.
2. Move It Indoors
Sometimes, even the evening is too hot. Fortunately, the number of indoor pickleball courts in Houston is growing. If you want to escape the sun entirely, check out:
- Fonde Recreation Center: A classic spot near downtown with wood floors.
- Life Time Fitness (Various Locations): Requires membership, but offers premium climate control.
- PALA Pickleball: A dedicated facility in Spring/The Woodlands area with covered/indoor options.
3. Hydration Strategy (Water is Not Enough)
In Houston humidity, your sweat doesn't evaporate efficiently, which means your body retains heat. You lose salt faster than you realize.
- Pre-Hydrate: Drink 16oz of water before you leave the house.
- Electrolytes: Bring packets (Liquid IV, LMNT, etc.) to add to your water. Plain water can actually flush out necessary salts if you drink too much of it without replenishing electrolytes.
- The "Cooling Towel": Keep a wet towel in a small cooler with ice. Putting this on your neck between games brings your core temperature down faster than drinking water.
4. Efficiency Beats Effort
In 95-degree heat, the player who runs less wins more. This is where technique saves you. Beginners often run frantically because they are out of position. Advanced players move efficiently.
If you find yourself exhausted after just 15 minutes, it’s likely a footwork issue, not a fitness issue. We can fix that.
